Welcome to the whirlwind

Welcome to the whirlwind. We found out last Friday Peg was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Tomorrow at 11am she'll undergo major surgery, then be home by Friday or Saturday. This blog will be the place to check on Peg and our family in general. We're pretty overwhelmed, so hopefully the blog will enable you to stay in touch until things settle out a bit and we're able to respond personally without spending a lot of time on the phone. There's a lot going on right now.

By the way, the left hand header photo was taken at Sunset State Beach this Spring when Peg was hangin' out of the back of the camper. The right hand photo is M-51, Peg's favorite galaxy.

Peg shut down her psychiatric practice of 20 years permanently last Wednesday. With the help of her friends in the therapy community, she's moving her patients to other care. She's grateful for her friends and colleagues who are willing to take her patients, some of whom Peg has treated for many years and are just as shocked by the news of Peg's medical condition as we all are.

I will update this blog as frequently as warranted, with words, photos and video. I know so many of you want to contact us by phone, but we're just swamped with the day to day mechanics of the task ahead. I've been asked if we can be followed on Twitter--nope. We're non-tweeters.

Please feel free to write to us in the comments section and I'll read your responses aloud to Peg when she's recuperating.

Life is often full of oddball left turns. We're grateful to have so many wonderful people sharing this taxicab with us.

Dear Peggy - I'm sorry to hear that you need to deal with cancer. Before doing any radiation or chemo, please consider looking at some of the info collected from Kathy Smick's battle with cancer, including the DVD "Healing Cancer From the Inside" (diet) and "Eating" (diet)
http://www.kelleyharris.com/notes/cancer/cancer.html

It also lists some great resources in Northern California, including: John McDougall, M.D. (http://www.drmcdougall.com/), and Commonweal Cancer Help Program (http://www.commonweal.org/programs/cancer-help.html)

I know you probably feel anxious to fix things. But most of the docs I respect say that you have lots of time to research and decide on treatment options. Cancer develops over approx 10 years. Spending some months exploring options won't likely hurt, and can help you find the right path forward for you.

I'd be glad to discuss this further and help how I can. I'll write to Eric with my number.

Wishing you well,
Kelley Harris, partner of Kathleen Smick.

Eric and Peggy,

We're shocked to learn that Peggy has been diagonsed with ovarian cancer, but we're hoping that treatment will be effective in restoring Peggy's health.

You have both been an enormous support to Diane and me. Please let us know if there is any way we can help you, including bringing over meals, providing transportation for Zoe, or anything else.

Sincerely,
Bill and Diane Durston

Hi Guys!

I am sending lots of hugs and warm thoughts in this first short note! You are embarking on a new and unusual journey that might have all kinds of surprisingly interesting sidetrips. The first appears to be all the friends who are gathering together with healing thoughts and prayers. You will be in my prayers daily, Peg, and I'll try to swirl you along the beach during my morning jaunts with the dog and my jogging buddy. So while you are healing, if you are feeling warm waves lapping over you.....well....I guess it just means that my warm thoughts are reaching you. Best wishes to you tomorrow. I hope I can bring you some baked goodies when I am in Sacramento in July. Zoey...maybe we can bake something together again!

Tons of love,
Lori

Peg - think of this like the movie Alien - you're just premptively removing something that belongs in deep space. We ALL are praying for you. I'm not very good a praying so if you end up with the washer/dryer combo you'll know why.

Peggy, Eric & Zoe...I've been thinking of you 3 non-stop and wish for the best and hope for a clean bill of health...what the hell is a clean bill of health? You're all strong individuals but a source to be dealt with collectively. Barb and & I will follow along with great expectations. Give a shout if and when you need or want to...

Hi Peg,

I don't know why this has happened, but I do know that if there is anybody who can beat this, it is you - especially with Eric and Zoe by your side. I am thinking of you so often these days and just the thought of you makes me feel optimistic. Hope you know how much you all are loved.
Love,
Danielle Smith

Peg, my dear old friend,
I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. I clearly remember the whirl of feelings that go with a cancer diagnosis.
Remember to go easy on yourself, let people take gentle care of you, and focus on healing.
You are in my heart, thoughts and prayers.
I love you,
Leann

I'm so sad to hear this news! Just days ago I was looking at your annual missive and thinking I should email you. I can only imagine the shock and overwhelming emotions you must all be dealing with, and I know there isn't anything that can fully calm that inner chaos. But Carolyn and I will hold all of you in our thoughts and prayers, asking for guardian angels to wrap each of you in a blanket of love and comfort. With love and support, Janice and Carolyn

Peggy...I trust that we are all still resonating with the sound and feeling of our circle around you last night beneath the stars. May we all continue to draw strength from the great powers of the universe and send it to you, Zoe and Eric through our love, prayers. I sense that your particular metaphysical expressway is a very busy place right now!

With great love and admiration..Bruce

Dear Peggy, Eric & Zoe,
Kelley just got us the news. After my battle with colon cancer, Kathy's battle with breast cancer, I know the fear that runs through our lives with the diagnosis.

I believe that we use all the resources available to us when we are facing our challenges. You will draw upon a strength that brings to you the most powerful healing. I am convinced that your choices will reveal more healing opportunities and that you (with the help of all your support groups) will face and conquer this 'dis'ease.

Know that you are loved, honored and cherished.

With love,

Aileen Grayce
